A premium handcrafted tango shoe is an investment that can last 8-10 years with proper care — or 18 months with neglect. The difference is method.
The 5 enemies of your tango shoes
- Humidity (sweat, rain, basement storage) — deforms the last and breeds mold
- Dust and salt — scratches the leather grain
- Sun and heat — dries and cracks leather
- Stacking shoes on top of each other — flattens the toe box
- Wearing the same pair daily — leather needs 24h to recover
Care by material
Smooth leather (kid, calfskin)
After each use: wipe with a soft dry cloth. Once per month: apply quality leather conditioner (Saphir Renovateur or Collonil 1909), let absorb 10 min, buff with horsehair brush.
Suede
Never use water or polish. Use brass-bristle suede brush to lift nap after each milonga. For stains: rub gently with clean white eraser. Spray suede protector every 3 months.
Patent leather
Wipe with damp microfiber cloth. For deep cleaning, apply small amount of patent leather cleaner. Never use regular shoe polish.
Satin (stage shoes)
Brush with soft natural-bristle brush. For marks: dab with barely-damp cloth and white vinegar (1:10). Air dry away from heat.
The sole — most overlooked part
For leather and suede soles: brush with brass brush to refresh texture before each milonga. For chrome soles: wipe with damp cloth — never expose to studio rosin.
Storage — secret of longevity
Insert cedar shoe trees or stuff with acid-free tissue paper. Store in cotton dust bag (never plastic), cool, dry place, away from sunlight. Rotate between 2-3 pairs.
When to consider re-soling
A well-cared tango shoe can be re-soled 2-3 times, doubling or tripling lifespan. Signs: bald spots, holes, reduced glide. We offer factory re-soling for Madreselva shoes.
