The single biggest mistake international buyers make with tango shoes is sizing. Argentine, European, US, and Japanese size systems use different reference points, and tango shoes are constructed with a more snug fit than street shoes by design. This guide gives you exact conversions, plus the three measurements that matter more than any size chart.

The Three Measurements That Matter

• Foot length (heel to longest toe, in mm) — the most important measurement. Stand with weight on the foot.
• Foot width (across the ball, in mm) — determines fit comfort.
• Arch height (low / medium / high) — affects shank engineering.

Why Tango Shoes Fit Differently

Tango shoes are built half a size smaller than street shoes by design. The foot must feel snug — almost like a glove — so that energy transfers cleanly into pivots and weight changes. A loose tango shoe is a dangerous tango shoe. If you wear a US 8 in street shoes, your tango shoe is likely a US 7.5 or even 7. This is normal and intentional.

If You’re Between Sizes

Go down (smaller). Leather stretches with wear, suede less so. Within 2-4 weeks of dancing, a perfectly snug tango shoe becomes the perfectly fitting tango shoe. A slightly loose tango shoe stays slightly loose forever.
