How to care for your shoes

zapatos de tango Madreselva

Each Madreselva pair is handmade with noble materials. Cared for properly, they’ll last for years. Care depends on the material — here’s how to protect each one.

Patent Leather

Shines because it has a varnish layer that seals the leather. That same layer is what needs protecting.

  • After each use: wipe with a dry, soft microfiber cloth to remove dust and fingerprints.
  • For extra shine: a drop of mineral oil or petroleum jelly, spread with a clean cloth. Never use leather cream — it softens the varnish.
  • If stained: a damp cloth with warm water and a drop of neutral soap. Dry immediately.
  • Avoid: prolonged direct sun, extreme cold (cracks the varnish), and bags where they rub against metal zippers.

Suede

The most delicate material — and the easiest to enhance with wear, if cared for properly.

  • Before first use: apply waterproof suede spray at 20 cm, two light passes.
  • After each use: brush with a soft-bristle brush in one direction to lift the nap.
  • Dry stains: white suede eraser or stale bread rubbed gently.
  • Wet stains: let dry completely in open air, then brush. Do not wet the suede.
  • Avoid: rain, puddles, contact with creams, perfumes and aerosols.

Satin

Delicate and elegant material. Sensitive to rubbing and moisture.

  • After each use: pass a soft dry cloth, without rubbing.
  • Small stains: barely damp cloth with cold water — pat dry with a clean cloth, no rubbing.
  • If the satin gets flattened in some area: gentle steam from a kettle at 20 cm (without touching) and let rest.
  • Avoid: water, perfume directly on the shoe, contact with rough fabrics, and storing them compressed.

Glitter

The crystals are attached using artisan technique. Cared for properly, they don’t detach.

  • After each use: soft microfiber cloth, gentle pass, no strong pressure.
  • If dust accumulates between crystals: clean makeup brush, soft movements.
  • If a crystal gets pressed flat: let rest 24 hrs without pressure and it will recover volume.
  • Avoid: bending the shoe, storing objects on top, contact with perfumes and creams.

Metallic Leather / Flash

Leather treated with metallic pigment — rose gold, silver, gold. Chrome shine but more delicate than classic leather.

  • After each use: soft microfiber cloth, no products.
  • If stained: barely damp cloth with warm water. Dry immediately.
  • To maintain shine: once a month, cloth with two drops of mineral oil.
  • Avoid: regular leather creams (darken the metallic finish), prolonged direct sun, running water.

General care (for all materials)

  • After each milonga: leave shoes out 24 hrs in a ventilated spot before storing. Leather breathes.
  • Storage: individual fabric bag (no plastic), shoe tree or tissue paper inside to maintain shape.
  • Transport: rigid bag to avoid heel impacts.
  • Chrome sole: if it slides too much, scrub lightly with a fine wire brush. If it grips too much, dampen with a cloth and water and feel it soften.
  • Heel tips: when you notice wear on the metal heel tip, replace it. It’s the cheapest piece to maintain.
