When did you decide to create your own costumes to dance as a Tango professional? I started my career as a classical dancer at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires. There I received a professional dancer, then life took me through the tango stages.
First as something complementary to my career until then I fell in love with tango and decided to devote myself passionately to that. And so it was that for more than 18 years I toured the world with my partner Juan Corvalan and we were one of the solo duos of the Cía. Tango Pasión as well as other very important ones such as the one known by Maestro Mariano Mores and also invited on different occasions in important television shows.
We were also elected representatives of Argentina at the event of the Congress of the Americas in Miami, where all the Presidents of the World congregated.
Following my need as an artist and having had a grandmother who taught me everything about sewing since I was a little girl and transmitted all the love she put into making a garment, I began to design my own dresses.
Because as a tango dancer the dresses that were used were not very favorable to me and because I needed to extend my figure, since my partner was very tall, I decided to make some that almost reached my ankle.
At first I was very criticized, but then it was imposed and today it became a fashion and it was totally obsolete to wear a short tango dress.
What does it mean for you to represent the country, first through tango and then through your clothes? For me it was a pride to take tango to the most important stages in the world and to know such different cultures to learn from them. We toured the world and arrived in countries where they had never seen tango dance.
It was a great pride to dance in the Acropolis of Greece, in the Kremlin of Russia, in the Theater Arena of Turkia, in the Theater des Champs Elysees in Paris and in China where they hugged for the first time among strangers to learn to dance tango.
What nationality are the majority of your clients? Of course the market was born in Argentina, since my first clients, and to this day the same thing happens, are many professional colleagues. In fact, since the beginning of the World Tango Championship, my brands were chosen to be the Sponsor of the same and then also in most international as well as regional sub-branches.
I began to become recognized abroad also mainly in the United States, Japan, Italy, France and Spain, since they started with word of mouth.
What happens with the brand, is that people trust me and my company, even without even knowing Buenos Aires, since my main attribute is that behind the designer they find a dancer with a lot of experience that advises them on their looks .
I am very dedicated, I answer each one of my questions and attend in a personalized way, of course I have a wonderful team that helps me run my company.
What does tango mean to you? Many times they asked me this question and I think of my grandfather with whom I danced my first steps when I was a classical dancer and saw tango as a dance far away in my career. I think of my grandmother who accompanied me helping me since I was very young until I saw my company grow. I remember that I used to come to stay whole afternoons to cook with me, she was my inspiration.
I think of my mother, who accompanied me countless times on my tours, supporting me unconditionally, I think of those standing applause from people in such remote places.
In those beautiful theaters that today I long for with pride, in those bars of the Cumparsita that when I resonated my skin bristled as if it was the first time I went out to dance. Even after so many years I am excited, it is my life, it is my passion, which I used to express it with the movement and today I turn it into my designs but I always did it from the heart: it is the only way I know how to do it.
Do you think that in Argentina more attention is lacking to this characteristic musical genre? A little yes, although in recent years it has been given a place of greater importance since Tango is a World Heritage Site, and it is so, because it is the only dance in the world that managed to unite cultures where it does not matter if you speak the language or what culture you are: the hug can do everything and is our pride.
Although I must say that in the rest of the world you present yourself as a tango dancer and people do nothing but praise you and receive you as the artist you are and here is not the same, it will be like the old saying “nobody is a prophet in their land … “But in spite of that, Argentina is my country and here I have my affections and that is where my passion was born, that’s why I never thought about moving away.
